Jamberry, Blueberries for Sal  and The Litte Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear are some of their favorites.  I love to bring literacy and language into their daily lives. My oldest knows so many stories that if she finds one in her basket that she isn’t familiar with, she will exclaim, ‘Momma, I don’t know the words to this one.’ I love that at just three years old, she has already developed a love for reading. Even my one year old, who loves everything her big sister says and does, is developing a love for reading. She will sit and read books all day long with me and her big sister.

Anyways, since we’ve picked all kinds of berries this summer, it was time to go blueberry picking.  It is prime blueberry season here and my kids love blueberries.  The bushes were a bit tall for them, but they figured out how to do it.  My oldest would grab a branch and pull it down for herself and her sister to eat I mean pick the berries.  She is so thoughtful!

My youngest even learned the word, ‘purple’ because we had to talk about not picking the green ones, just the purple ones, because as my oldest determined that blueberries were not actually blue, but purple.  So my youngest would exclaim as she stuffed the fruit in her mouth, ‘Pickin poople bootie berries, Momma’!  She did not however understand why she didn’t have any berries in her basket since she kept eating as she picked!

After they both ate their fill, I wasn’t quite finished, so they found some sticks and amused themselves for another 20 minutes while I continued to pick berries.  My oldest was teaching my youngest how to write her name in the dirt using the sticks.  Since she knows how to write most of the letters of the alphabet, she would ask me how to spell certain words while I continued picking.  She really is a genius!  Both children used their sticks to write letters in the dirt.  My oldest is such a great role model for her older sister!  I pray that she will always be as kind and thoughtful to others as she is now.
